Over 800 smoke alarms were installed throughout West Valley City in late March. 

The crusade was organized by the American Red Cross of Utah and West Valley City as volunteers early on a Saturday morning at the Red Cross’s new humanitarian office in West Valley City. They ventured throughout the city to install over 500 smoke alarms and 300 carbon monoxide alarms. 

Volunteers also spoke with residents about fire education and escape plans for each home. 

“It’s always wonderful to see so many people come together with the simple goal of making our communities safer,” Jeremiah Lafranca, executive director of the American Red Cross Greater Salt Lake Chapter, said in a press release. “Additionally, this year’s partnership with Enbridge Gas ensures we are protecting people from harmful gases in their homes as well while mitigating the risk of home fires.” 

According to the release, the American Red Cross of Utah recently received a $60,000 grant and 300 carbon monoxide and natural gas combination detectors from Enbridge Gas Utah to support home fire safety and disaster preparedness efforts across the state. Detectors will be distributed throughout the year through the Red Cross free smoke alarm program. 

Residents can schedule a free home visit at soundthealarm.org/Utah. Those visits include smoke alarm installation and creating specialized evacuation plans. 

Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 60% according to the National Fire Protection Agency. 

The Red Cross press release said its Home Fire Campaign has helped save more than 2,550 lives nationwide since 2014 when it launched. In 2025, Red Cross volunteers in Utah installed more than 1,500 free smoke alarms to help protect families across the region.
