Centennial Park is ready to welcome its newest feature: a pump track.

The official ribbon cutting for the brand new pump track was at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

“This (pump track) is another amenity for (bikers) and it’s something that has gained a lot of popularity over the last few years across the country,” Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Day told the West Valley City Council last fall. The council unanimously approved the funding for the track, just over $156,000, which will come from park impact fees.

Used primarily by bikes, a pump track is a continuous loop of banks and turns that allows the rider to maneuver around the track without pedaling by utilizing control, balance and coordination. The track will be located just north of the skate park (3189 S. 5600 West).

The success of the skate park has seen more than just skateboarders using it with bicyclists regularly riding through the skate park, Day said last fall, adding she expects the track to alleviate congestion in the skate park thereby increasing safety.

The track won’t just be for bikers though, but all wheeled users including skateboards, scooters and roller blades. Two tracks will be installed, a shorter one for beginners and a larger one for more advanced users.

Originally slated to be opened November 2018, the track's opening was delayed to open during the warmer spring season, only to be postponed to July after heavy rainfall pushed back construction.
